Faculty Profile

Alice Render & Dale Clevenger
NMS Horn Faculty

We both teach privately with New Music School and at Roos evelt University. For a beginning or young student, the teacher is so very important, for both musical and technical issues. As the student progresses in age and instruction, the teacher becomes so much more important....in fact....a fine, musical, experienced and understanding teacher can make the difference towards the possibility and the reality of a career in music.

We both have been teaching all our careers....collectively, over 65 years. We have dozens of students throughout the world playing professionally. And most of them are now teaching as well as playing. The basic studies that we use are: Singer "Embouchure Building", Koprasch  Etudes, Book 1 and 2, Forrest Standley Studies, Concone Etudes and Orchestral Excerpts. Also the Mozart Horn Concertos, the Richard Strauss Horn Concertos and many other studies and solo horn music.

I am solo horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1966. Alice has played extra with the CSO for more than 25 years. She was solo horn in the West Australia Symphony Orchestra and taught at the University of West Australia. Three of her students are now in solo horn positions in Australian orchestras. Together, we teach and oversee the instruction of the horn students of the New Music School.
