Paul’s goal as a teacher is to help students learn the ability to communicate their musical intentions through the instrument to a listener and to provide a context in which to develop that musical intent. Paul also strives to help students gain the technical and personal skills to continue to pursue their musical passion at any level they choose.
In addition to New Music School, Paul is a trombone instructor at Carthage College teaching tenor trombone, bass trombone and euphonium students majoring in music performance and education. He has been teaching students of all ages and skill levels for 13 years. Paul has also been the trombone instructor at the W.O. Smith Community Music School in Nashville, TN. Lessons with Paul will focus on development of strong fundamental technique through the study of the Arban method, vocalises by Bordogni and Sieber, the etudes of Blazhevich and the unaccompanied cello suites of J.S. Bach.
Paul performs extensively as one of the founding members of the Gaudete Brass Quintet (www.gaudetebrass.com) and has performed with them all over the country in concerts and at universities as well as the quintet’s first album “Brass Outings.” As part of the quintet he has given lectures and masterclasses to many university and high school students. In addition to the quintet Paul also performs on Euphonium and the Renaissance Sackbut, a reproduction of a trombone from 1632. Paul holds a Bachelors degree cum laude from the Northwestern University School of Music and a Masters Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts.
