Peggy Michel is proud to teach oboe at the New Music School and serve as the oboe Faculty chair. She enjoys the opportunity to work with bright, talented young students who are at a particularly formative point in their development as musicians as well as in their personal growth. Her thirty years of teaching have taught her that when a student learns to play the oboe he/she learns life skills – discipline, focus, communication, and physical coordination. These skills will enrich the student enabling them to realize their potential no matter what career path they choose.
Former students from her private studio, as well as those who have studied under her at Wichita State University, San Diego State University and the University of San Diego have gone on to successful careers as physicians, graphic designers, lawyers, and teachers as well as professional musicians. Many have gone on to attend the finest music schools including Oberlin, Curtis, Indiana University and the New England Conservatory. They have played professionally in the Chicago Symphony, New World Symphony, the Wichita Symphony and the Portland Opera Orchestra.
In addition to teaching at NMS, Ms. Michel teaches oboe and chamber music at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. She is an active performer since coming to Chicago in 1998 and has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera, Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Chamber Musicians, and Ars Viva. She is a member of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project and Music of the Baroque.
She holds a Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with John Mack. She can be heard of several CD’s with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra including as a featured soloist in Samuel Barber’s Capricorn Concerto on the Koch label.
