New Music School introduces the Fellow and Junior Fellow Programs for Academic Year 2010/2011. Each Fellow program will include a curriculum based mentorship program for students and parents searching for an enriched and accelerated course study on all instruments. Senior Faculty Advisors, from renowned orchestras and universities, and Faculty team up to provide the Fellowship Program at NMS.

Details are provided below on each program with requirements to participate. Enrollment is limited based on each instrument. Applications are due NLT July 1, 2010. Acceptance into the program is on a rolling admission between May 1 and August 1, 2010. Once enrollment is complete, all further applicants will be placed on a waiting list.

Junior Fellows Program

For the family/student interested in enriched learning experiences in music, look no further than the Junior Fellows Program. This selective program provides a comprehensive musical experience, involving mentorship from our Senior Faculty Advisors, Conservatory based music education, performance opportunities, and most importantly, lessons with a critically acclaimed faculty. 

Curriculum

  • 32 Weekly Private Lessons from Faculty - Two half hour lessons.
  • 24 Theory/Solfege Classes at NMS, Composition/Improvisation Classes
  • Monthly Studio Class (some studio classes with Senior Faculty Advisors)
  • Annual Masterclass from Senior Faculty Advisors
  • Annual Mentorship Meeting
  • Quarterly Jury
  • Quarterly Solo Performance in Studio and All School Recitals
  • Semi Annual Meet the Artists Workshop
  • Attend Performances at: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Joffrey Ballet, Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble, Baroque Band, International Chamber Artists, Visiting Artists

Process

Open to students from only Chicago, Oak Park/River Forest, and Highland Park regions unless student commutes to these regions. 

Students interested in applying for the Junior Fellow Program must have at least one year of instruction on their primary instrument and be under the age of 12.

To apply, students must include:

  • Completed Application + Application Fee ($40)
  • Evaluation Form Completed by Music Teacher at School
  • Evaluation Form Completed by Private Instructor (if applicable)
After review of the application, a student will receive an interview if they meet the minimum standards for the program.

Fellows Program (college prep)

Looking for an intense and accelerated study of your instrument. College bound? Ready to go the extra mile? 

New Music School’s Fellow program is the perfect place for you. Designed by some of the worlds best musicians and teachers, NMS invites you to be a part of a select few students in our critically acclaimed Fellow Program. 

The Fellows Program is built for students that show the necessary dedication and desire to make music on a high level. This program is geared towards the most advanced training. Studies will include solo repertoire, mastery of etudes, and sight-reading. Students also begin preparation for college entrance auditions and interviews. The Fellows program is by recommendation and audition only.

  • Semi Annual Meet the Artists Workshop
  • Attend Performances at: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Joffrey Ballet, Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, International Contemporary Ensemble, Baroque Band, International Chamber Artists, Visiting Artists
  • Optional components: composition and improvisation classes

Process

Open to students from all Chicagoland Regions.

Students must prepare by tape/CD/mp3. After reviewing the recording, students selected for the next round will be invited for an interview and performance.  

  • Play three scales in two octaves at Eighth Note = 120
  • Two contrasting Pieces 

Students must include :

  • Completed Application + Application Fee ($40)
  • Recording
  • Evaluation Form Completed by Music Teacher
  • Evaluation Form Completed by Private Instructor
  • Repertoire/Performance Vitae Attached
