The International Young Artist Concerto Competition is our biggest event of the year! This year's concerto competition is an amazing opportunity to support your NMS peers. For many participants, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform with orchestra, and we would love to see you there to cheer them, so invite your family and friends to attend!
Young, and beginning musicians are encourage to attend this learning experience. The youngest competitor is 11 years old, and we know that the younger audience members will be inspired.

Benny Wang (13), studies under Yana Reznik at New Music School and is currently in the House of Beethoven. In May 2020 Benny gave his first solo recital that NMS streamed on Facebook Live that has been viewed over one thousand times. In 2018, Benny performed at the Harpa Hall of Reykjavik in Iceland and Buntrock Hall of Chicago Symphony Center. Benny has received awards including gold medalist at the North Shore Music Teacher Association Piano Sonata-Sonatina Festival and reached the semifinals of the 2020 NMS Concerto Competition where played a piano concerto with a full orchestra.
Alongside piano, Benny is highly involved at his middle school the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He serves as the Treasurer of the Middle School student council. Benny loves computer programming and competing in math competitions. He recently won 1st place in the Chicago Chapter at the 2021 MATHCOUNTS Chapter Invitational Competition.

Seven year old Yixi Shen practices with diligence three hours per day. With the support of her mother, teachers, and New Music School, Yixi continues to make remarkable progress on both violin and piano. After studying violin for only one year with Yuriy Geyer, she participated in her first concerto competition in January ‘21 playing the Reiding Violin Concerto in B Minor. Yixi began studying piano in Fall 2018, and now studies with Jeffrey Panko.
Yixi has participated in the Honorable Mention & Showcase recital at New Music School, NMS Concerto Competition, and keeps up with her music theory assignments to support her rapid growth and practicing. During quarantine in 2021 Yixi recorded a performance of Mozart Sonata K. 545 to share music with children at Northwestern Children’s Hospital. Outside of music, Yixi loves figure skating, writing, and making art work.

Please show your love and support to the Sprezzatura Quartet, our first feature on our young artist showcase - NMS Profile Sprezzatura is an Italian word meaning the art of performing a difficult task so gracefully, that it looks effortless. Don't be fooled by that definition, however!
This diverse group of teenage musicians shine because of their diligent practice, good chemistry, and exceptional coaching by NMS’s premier ensemble-in-residence, the Black Oak Ensemble. Engaging stage performers, the teens' physical energy and skillful musical interpretations intrigue admirers. Meet the Sprezzatura Quartet! Sprezzatura comprises four very auspicious musicians, Nazeeh Shahid (violin/viola), and Tristan Zhu (violin/viola), Chance Inouye (violin),and Kevin Hernandez (cello).
Sprezzatura is a quarter finalist in the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition where they compete to advance further. They have successfully debuted in several competitions this 2021 competition season playing the likes of Shostakovich, Dvorak, Haydn, and Ravel.
