Matthew Lorenz

NMS Piano Faculty


Matthew Lorenz is a growing artistic presence in the American Midwest and the international stage at large. Matthew’s performance experience as a pianist extends from Bismarck, ND to Santa Rosa, NM, then Paris; and beyond. Currently active in Chicago, IL, Matthew maintains a full performing schedule alongside his private teaching work. Matthew is also a frequent collaborator, in demand throughout the Midwest, called on for standard chamber works and as well for a wide variety of contemporary niches like cabaret, musical theater, and 21st century opera. Since 2018 he has maintained several international chamber music residencies, in Japan, China, and France. Matthew currently studies under Adam Neiman, Edward Auer, and Junghwa Auer at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College for the Performing Arts in the Diploma Program. Performance and pedagogy are intertwined in every musician’s development, and this growth is nowhere more solidified than in the cultural exchange of private music lessons. With nearly a decade of teaching experience encompassing piano, composition, and mathematics in private and classroom settings, Matthew has solidified an effective method for music learning based on historical practices and contemporary research. The fundamental techniques of pianism, the rudiments of music theory, and tried-and-tested tips for performance coincide with improvisation, voice, and musical imagination for insightful and enjoyable lessons for students of all ages.
